How to Choose Your Surgeon

There are many plastic surgeons all over the country but not all of them are excellent. Money and medicine are a bad mix especially when it comes to cosmetic surgery. The majority of cosmetic surgery procedures are elective and you should never be forced into it.

Take your time and choose your surgeon well. Every single day there are horror stories about cosmetic surgery gone awry.

Before you select your surgeon, you should know the following about him or her:

- has the surgeon completed his training in plastic surgery and how many years experience does he/she have

- is your surgeon board certified in plastic surgery

- does your surgeon work in accredited medical facilities

- does he have privileges in a hospital- important to know especially when there is a complication and you require admission for more intense care

- has a decent reputation

- has no prior medical malpractice record

- fully discusses all your options and details the procedures

- gives you time to think about the surgery

- Has your surgeon spent enough time explaining everything to you?

- Does mention his/her complications and how they were dealt with. Any surgeon who tells you that they have never had a complication is a LIAR.

- Discusses your options just in case the surgery fails

- Does the surgeon have experience with breast surgery

- Has before and after photos of his previous patients

- Is the surgical facility fully accredited for general anesthesia?

- Will there be an M.D. Anesthesiologist?

- Are the implants U.S. made and FDA approved?

To determine whether a surgeon is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, call the American Board of Medical Specialties at 1-866-275-2267 and ask them.

One can also go the State Licensing Board to determine if the surgeon is currently licensed and insured
