Tips to Save on Auto Insurance

Provided By:

As the number of drivers on the road continues to increase and percentage of drivers on the road without insurance continues to rise, so will the average auto insurance premium. The amount consumer’s pay for auto insurance depends on a number of factors ranging from age and gender to driving record and usage, but overall, Americans pay nearly $2,000 a year for a standard auto insurance policy. Increases in auto insurance rates are unavoidable, but there are several ways for low-risk drivers to cash in on clean driving records and more.

Unfortunately, high-risk drivers are not eligible for most discounts and other offers. According to AutoInsurancetips.com, a high-risk is a driver whose actions, health, experience, or knowledge makes the driver a risk to themselves or other drivers on the highway. A high-risk driver is a new driver, a driver that commits multiple infractions under state and/or local motor vehicle laws, a driver that commits infractions under state/federal criminal codes (DUI/DWI, reckless driving) and drivers with an unusually high number of accidents in a short time. This usually means 2-3 accidents in one year. Drivers with certain medical conditions are in the high-risk category as well.

Auto insurance companies are more than willing to reward safe drivers, drivers with standard and/or added safety features, driver’s with good credit, drivers with a clean driving and accident record, drivers that belong to a professional auto club or organization (AAA, BP Motor Club, Shell), and driver’s that are open to combining all of their auto insurance policies into one (home, health, life). Let’s start with safe drivers. To be considered a safe driver, motorists can enroll in a safe driver or defensive driver course. The state department of motor vehicles must approve the course. Upon completion of the program, a certificate will be awarded. The auto insurance provider will need to see a copy of the certificate in order to offer a discount on the policy, so it is important to keep track of this important document.

Next, many auto insurance companies offer lower rates for standard and added safety features. All that is required is written proof/documentation and the policyholder’s signature. Just a few features that might help you qualify for lower rates include an alarm system, airbags, BS anti-lock brakes, and even automatic seat belts. Check with your state insurance department and your insurance agent to find out which safety features qualify.

In most states, financial responsibility laws do not prohibit the use of credit reports to determine auto insurance rates. Your credit report is not the only tool auto insurance companies use to determine rates, but it does help to determine risk. It is believed that individuals with poor credit file more claims. The good news is -- you can begin to work on improving your credit by paying down debt and paying off collections. As your score improves, your rates will go down.

A membership with auto clubs, such as AAA, or professional organizations offered through your employed may save you money on your car insurance. It is important to ask your insurer if any of these discounts are offered while also pursuing them through your employer.

Another way to save money on auto insurance is by combining all of your insurance policies into one or allowing one company to carry all policies. A large number of major insurance companies offer home, health, life, and auto. These insurance providers appreciate your business and they will award you for your loyalty. And finally, never underestimate the power of shopping and comparing. You can use this as a bargaining chip when searching for a policy. Remember, auto insurance companies want your business, and they are willing to offer discounts and specials to keep you from purchasing a policy from a competitor.
